Background

Founded in 1996, the True Buddha Temple Maryland (TBTM) is a nonprofit corporation based in Montgomery County, Maryland. As a Section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt religious and charitable organization, all contributions are tax deductible.

Located twenty miles outside of Washington, DC., TBTM is True Buddha School’s dharma center in the capital area. After operating out of a small sixty-year-old house for twelve years, in 2008, TBTM began raising money and planning for the construction of a new temple building.

Immediate Goal

TBTM plans to complete the construction of a Tibetan style monastery on the existing parcel of land with environmentally friendly materials and technologies. The new temple intends to leverage solar, ground source heat, and other renewable energy to be self-sufficient in energy consumption. TBTM aspires to be a green building and green energy showcase for the region.

The fundraising target for the new temple is $3,000,000. Individual supporters from around the world have so far contributed $1,000,000. Through the call for corporate contributions, TBTM hopes to reach the fundraising goal in the first half of 2013.

Long-term Goals

Expand the education of Buddha’s wisdom, especially his teachings of universal equality, peace, compassion, and benefiting others. Help everyone to create a positive influence on the community and country through the purification of mind and body.
Grow the existing charitable operations. Join other organizations in helping the suffering and provide disaster relief around the world, regardless of religion and race.
Enrich the community by offering learning in meditation, language skills, and spiritual and physical well being, as well as providing assistance to the community’s new immigrants. Offer activities to promote ethnic and cultural diversity awareness.

Responsible Oversight

Building a new temple is the only goal at this time. All contributions are deposited into a dedicated bank account. No “new temple funds” will be used for other purposes. All contributors will receive tax-deductible receipts.
